Infrastructure WA
IWA Update | December 2024
Season's greetings
From the CEO
With the year coming to an end, we'd like to take a few moments to reflect on some of the achievements and events in the last few months of 2024 for the Infrastructure WA (IWA) team.
Importantly, IWA is now back in our usual accommodation at Level 41, 108 St Georges Terrace after the completion of rectification works from water damage due to whole-of-floor flooding. We'd like to thank any stakeholders that met with us during this period for your patience and understanding with our temporary arrangements.
The last quarter of 2024 had several notable achievements for IWA:
IWA had the opportunity to study world's best practice is modern methods of construction and explore its application in the WA context as a result of our CEO attending the 2024 Australian British Infrastructure Catalyst in September. At the event, IWA also had the chance to showcase WA's record infrastructure program and explore industry partnership opportunities.
- IWA's role at the forefront of digital infrastructure was recognised with our work to develop a Digital First Infrastructure Policy being nominated for the Office of Digitial Government Best Practice in Digital Transformation Award at the Institute of Public Administration Australia WA's Achievement Awards 2024. This program of work includes the development of the Digital First Infrastructure Policy scoping document, prepared in response to a recommendation from the 2022 State Infrastructure Strategy (Strategy), and the soon to be released Major Infrastructure Proposal Assessment Subject Guide: Application of digital infrastructure proposals.
- The WA Government continues to demonstrate a strong commitment to the 2022 Strategy, with good progress made in implementing the Strategy's recommendations. Released earlier this month, the State Infrastructure Strategy Implementation Progress Report 2024 notes that:
- 31 actions (20%) are now complete
- 118 actions (76%) are 'in progress'
- 4 actions have not commenced
- 3 actions have been discontinued.
- IWA is contributing to building capacity and capability of government to plan and deliver major projects by introducing best practice guidance for major infrastructure proposal proponents covering areas of Aboriginal participation, decarbonisation and digital. These policy documents, along with an updated version of the Major Infrastructure Proposal Assessment Guidelines, were finalised in late 2024 and will be released in early 2025. Their release will be accompanied by a program of information sessions for interested stakeholders.
IWA is looking forward to 2025 and a range of work programs ramping up. This includes beginning development of the next state infrastructure strategy, planned for presentation to WA Government in 2027. IWA has prepared a program of stakeholder engagement to support development of the Strategy. Form the first quarter of 2025, IWA will reach out to targeted groups to gain early insights on work progressed to date.
Our offices will be closed from Monday 23 December until Wednesday 1 January inclusive. We look forward to working with you in 2025 once we re-open on Thursday 2 January.
Here at IWA we wish everyone a safe and peaceful festive season and New Year and thank you for your ongoing support.
